What We’re Doing
SOAP DELIVERIES + SANITATION STATIONS
Our Camp staff has been diligently delivering bathing and washing soap to Camp Chisomo children each week. They educate the children of the importance of washing their hands and clothes in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and to help protect them from other illnesses that may land them in a clinic or hospital. Because shops and stores are more frequently closed, our staff travels to various markets to gather the supplies, and then travels through villages to make sure each child gets soap delivered each week. Our staff has also built sanitation stations at Camp for visitors to wash hands when arriving and when leaving.
COMMUNITY EDUCATION ON COVID-19
Due to the rurality of our location, accurate and trustworthy information regarding COVID-19 is hard to come by. Many rumors and fears sweep through before accurate prevention education even arrives. Our stateside and Malawi staff are working together to bring up to date and accurate information to the village, delivering helpful preventative measures to the children, guardians, village leaders, even health care officials.
SAFETY MEASURES FOR CAMP STAFF
We have worked hard to keep our staff safe and protected during this time so that they may continue to serve the community of Camp Chisomo. We have equipped each of our staff members with motorbikes that allow them to safely travel through the town and village without needing to use public transportation.
MEDICAL SUPPLIES FOR STAFF AND CHILDREN
Thanks to our sustaining donors, our staff was able to stock up on medical supplies needed before COVID-19 reached Malawi. Our staff is able to use face masks and gloves when taking children to the clinic and distribute supplies as needed throughout the community. Camp Chisomo is able to be a place of resource for the community and help various needs they may have.
STUDY MATERIALS FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE HOME FROM SCHOOL
With schools in Malawi closed, our students are faced with a halt in their education. With no formal access to resources at home, and no programs allowing distanced learning, our staff is working to provide all students with study books and materials to continue their learning from home in the hope of being caught up and prepared when schools do open again. These students have fought too hard for their education—they won’t let this stop them!
